Dead Man's Bones, a band made of Zach Shields and Ryan Gosling, came to play for me (don't burst my bubble!) last night. The opening acts - all 4 of them - were local boys with charms in spades and not much else. Their talents were of the high school, small time venue variety, which was oddly charming and definitely deviated from what one would expect from the normal indie rock show opening acts. They really played to the audience, who was mostly girls, with a smattering of boys here and there. Now I know what it's like to be amongst the screaming fan girls, you know, the ones who faint and stuff upon seeing the pretty boys? They were all dressed up as if to prepare for the off chance that they should be seen by the stars. Sighs and whispers of "he's STUNNING!" "GORGEOUS!" accompanied flashes of cameras going off as the girls tried to pinch themselves and documented their being in the same universe as Ryan Gosling.
The show was a marriage between a talent show (done professionally) and a massive star sighting. That's not to say it wasn't any good, music-wise. It was everything one would expect from the band: atmospheric, whimsy, creative, and ... musical. Zach and Ryan were actually quite shy on stage, all things considered. They often turned their back to the audience, watching the choir (the local Happy Ghost Choir was quite energetic) as though it was the star of the show, not them. I had a really good time singing along (I had the feeling I was one of the few who could sing along with them?) and screaming (WHAT? They were SO. HAWT. in person? I knew Ryan was but omg so was Zach??). The peeps I was with were so impressed that they bought the album after the show. See, more fans for you, Ryan & Zach, thanks to me! HIRE ME!!!
